"Ari, honey, you have to slow down!" Will said loudly so he could be heard over his daughter’s running.
"It’s my first day of school, Daddy! I can’t be late," Ari answered, although she stopped. She put her hands on her hips and tapped her foot against the floor as she waited for him to catch up to her. Will saw traits of Sami in her when she got like this and it scared him.
"You’re not going to be late, I promise," Will said, bending down to fix her pigtails, which had gotten disarrayed from her running. "The classroom is right behind you." As soon as his hands let go of her hair, she was gone and disappeared into her 1st grade classroom.
Will was standing up and about to follow her when another little girl zoomed past him and into the same classroom.
"Alex! Alexandra!" a voice said from behind Will. The shout was quickly followed by a sigh as the man to whom the little girl belonged stopped just behind Will.
Will turned around. The man was just about his height, with dark brown hair and big brown eyes. Will’s heart skipped a beat but he ignored it. “Yours?” Will chuckled.
"Unfortunately," the man said. Then he laughed. "Just kidding. She’s the light of my life."
"Mine’s the same. And also very eager to start school. I wish I could remember being that excited for school. I’m Will, by the way. Will Horton."
"Sonny Kiriakis." Sonny held out his hand and Will took it. They held on to each other’s hand for an inordinate amount of time, theirs eyes locked on each other’s, before Will broke the spell and dropped his hand.
Will cleared his throat and, hoping to clear some of the awkwardness, said, “Shall we go inside?”
Sonny nodded and followed Will in the classroom.
